This Technique Narrative presents an introduction to a set of analytical approximations referred to as regular perturbation.
This is a particular mathematical tool within the broader set of perturbation methods. In general, perturbation methods are analytical techniques for obtaining approximate solutions to problems involving a small parameter, say ε.
These methods are especially powerful when problems are not amenable to closed-form solutions; moreover, perturbation methods can give further insight and corroborate the reasonableness of numerically obtained solutions. Several examples are presented here to introduce regular perturbation; electronic spreadsheet interactive models are included to help readers visualize the effectiveness of this method.
