COMAP's High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM)

November 4 – 17, 2020

COMAP's High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM) is an international contest designed to provide students with the opportunity to work as team members to engage in and improve their modeling, problem solving, and writing skills. Teams of up to four students from your school apply mathematics to model and develop a solution to a real-world problem. You can enter multiple teams. See Follow us on Twitter @COMAPMath for up-to-date contest information.

HiMCM Webinar ON DEMAND: The HiMCM webinar featuring COMAP's Executive Director, Contest Coordinator, and Director of HiMCM providing tips and guidance is online at

NEW FOR 2020:

·         Due to COVID-19 and current hybrid and virtual school models, student team members can work together remotely and virtually during the contest window. The rule remains that teams may not use any persons, other than their own team members, to discuss or obtain ideas for working on and solving their problem

·         The HiMCM now has a 25-page limit for submitted solution papers.

2020 HiMCM CONTEST DATES ARE November 4-17, 2020. Teams choose their own working times within this contest window. COMAP announces results in January 2021.

Let the contests be part of your in-person, hybrid, or virtual classroom this fall. Student teams can work on the contest virtually. Some high school faculty members use the contest as part of a mathematics or modeling course, some as a math club activity, and some simply encourage student teams to participate just for fun. Please share this information with all mathematics teachers and other high school educators (science, technology, engineering, etc.). For 2020, the HiMCM is a wonderful opportunity for a virtual team project.

COMAP is excited to again announce that all USA teams that successfully compete in the 2020 HiMCM, and are awarded a designation of Meritorious or above (Meritorious, Finalist, or Outstanding), will be invited to compete in the International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IM2C). IM2C will take place March 2020.

And, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) will again sponsor awards for the top Outstanding teams.

Talk to your students and put together a team (or several teams). Let the math modeling fun begin!
